뉴욕 기반의 비영리 리딩룸이자 집필 공간, 독립출판사 웬디스 서브웨이(Wendy’s Subway)의 아티스틱 디렉터 레이첼 발린스키(Rachel Valinsky)와 편집자 전주원(Juwon Jun)을 초청하여 토크를 진행합니다. 이번 토크는 웬디스 서브웨이가 2013년 설립 이후부터 지금까지 진행한 프로젝트를 추적합니다. 특히 주요 출판 프로젝트, 그중에서도 시간 기반 예술가의 작품을 인쇄물 형식으로 선보이는 학제적 출판 프로젝트 “도큐먼트 시리즈”를 집중적으로 다룹니다. “도큐먼트 시리즈”는 퍼포먼스 텍스트와 라이브 이벤트, 기록물과 아카이브적 충동, 나아가 일상과 창작, 퍼포먼스와 그 이후의 삶을 다룰 수 있는 장으로 펼쳐집니다. 토크에 이어서 옐로우 펜 클럽과 공동의 방향성 및 실천에 대해 대화를 나눕니다.

*웬디스 서브웨이는 뉴욕 브루클린에 위치한 비영리 리딩룸, 집필 공간, 독립출판사로, 신진 작가 및 필자가 실험적이고 시의적인 작업을 하고, 공동체적 배움과 사유의 대안적인 방법을 탐색할 수 있도록 지원한다. 나아가 예술과 문학에 창의적, 비판적, 담론적 개입하는 데 집중한다. 자유 독서, 토크, 퍼포먼스, 책모임, 단계별 글쓰기 워크숍 및 집중 프로그램 등 다양한 학제적 프로그램을 진행한다. 더불어 예술적, 학술적 리서치, 아카이브 및 라이브러리 프로젝트, 독립 출판 실천을 위한 레지던시와 시간 기반 예술가의 아티스트북, 문학적 텍스트, 하이브리드 장르 작업을 포괄한 다중적인 출판 프로젝트를 진행한다. 시와 소설, 비평 및 예술 서적 3,000여 권을 소장한 라이브러리를 운영한다.
*레이첼 발렌스키는 뉴욕과 파리를 기반으로 활동하는 작가, 편집자, 번역가로, 웬디스 서브웨이의 공동 창립자이자 아티스틱 디렉터, CARA (Center for Art, Research and Alliances)의 책임 에디터다. 아트포럼, 아트인아메리카, BOMB 등에 기고하며, 베를린 국제 영화제, 덴스페이스 프로젝트 등에 필자로 참여했다. Semiotext(e), Éditions Lutanie 등에서 출간한 문학 작품 및 평문을 번역했으며, 더키친, 퀸즈미술관, BAM 등에서 전시, 퍼포먼스, 퍼블릭 프로그램을 기획했다. 뉴욕대학 및 뉴스쿨에서 미술사, 퍼포먼스 아트라이팅, 비평적 사유 등을 가르친다.
*전주원은 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하는 예술가로, 경기미술관, RISD 미술관, 브루클린 여성 영화제, 라팜언더그라운드 영화제, 뉴필름메이커스 뉴욕, 보스턴 아트센터, CINEMQ 등에서 열린 전시에 참여했다. 웬디스 서브웨의에서 에디터로 활동하며, offshoot에 기고했다.

Rachel Valinsky, Artistic Director and Juwon Jun, Associate Editor, at Wendy’s Subway will present on the New York-based nonprofit reading room, writing space, and independent publisher, tracing the organization’s history since its founding in 2013 to its current programs and initiatives. With a focus on Wendy’s Subway’s publications, Valinsky [and Jun] will discuss the Document Series, an interdisciplinary publishing initiative that highlights work by time-based artists in printed form. The series offers artists a unique platform to explore the relationship of performance text to live event, of documentary and archival impulses to daily life and creative practice, and of performance to its afterlives. The talk will be followed by a brief conversation with the Yellow Pen Club – an art writers’ collective, program/exhibition space, and independent publisher based in Seoul – around the shared missions and practices.
Wendy’s Subway is a nonprofit reading room, writing space, and independent publisher in Brooklyn, New York. Wendy’s Subway supports emerging artists and writers in making experimental, urgent work and create alternative modes for learning and thinking in community. The organization is dedicated to encouraging creative, critical, and discursive engagement with arts and literature. The interdisciplinary program includes free readings, talks, performances, and reading groups, as well as sliding-scale writing workshops and intensives. Wendy’s Subway offers residencies designed to uplift artistic and scholarly research, archival and library projects, and independent publishing practices. A multi-series publishing initiative includes artists’ books, poetic texts, and hybrid-genre works by time-based artists. The non-circulating library holds a collection of over 3,000 titles, ranging from poetry and fiction, to criticism and art books.
Rachel Valinsky is a writer, editor, and translator based in New York and Paris. Rachel is co-founder and Artistic Director of Wendy’s Subway and the managing editor at CARA (Center for Art, Research and Alliances). Rachel’s criticism appears in publications including Artforum, Art in America and , BOMB, and she has written for the Berlinale International Film Festival and Danspace Project, among others. Rachel has translated literary and critical texts for Semiotext(e) and Éditions Lutanie, and curated exhibitions, performances, and public programs at The Kitchen, The Queens Museum, BAM, and elsewhere. She teaches art history, performance, art writing, and critical thinking at New York University and The New School.
Juwon Jun is an artist based in New York. She has shown work with Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, RISD Museum, Brooklyn Women’s Film Festival, Les Femmes Underground Film Festival, NewFilmmakers NY, Boston Center for the Arts, CINEMQ, and more. She is an Associate Editor at Wendy’s Subway. Her writing has appeared in offshoot.
