[대화] 아브니 탄돈 비에이라: 방법으로서의 지리학, 실천으로서의 공간

YPC SPACE는 아시아 전역을 가로질러 활동하는 연구자이자 큐레이터 아브니 탄돈 비에이라를 초청하여 지리학과 공간을 매개로 한 예술적·비평적 실천에 대해 대화를 나눕니다.
이번 대화에서 비에이라는 탈식민 연구와 비판적 지리학의 교차 지점에서 활동해온 문학 비평가로서의 활동을 공유합니다. 학문적 실천, 교육적 개입, 그리고 큐레토리얼 작업을 아우르며, 공간이 어떻게 문화 창작 및 생산을 위한 틀로 작동할 수 있는지를 살펴보고자 합니다. 남아시아에 대한 연구를 기반으로 최근 동아시아로 맥락을 확장한 비에이라의 학위 논문 연구 ‘The Geography of Letters,’ 설치 작업 ‘Where is the Heart of the City’(뉴델리, 서울, 모리야, 2024-25), 연구 프로젝트 ‘도시는 선이 아니다’(서울, 2024), 협업 영상 작업 ‘As Far as I Remember’(광주, 2024) 등을 소개합니다.
*아브니 탄돈 비에이라는 인도 출신 저술가, 연구자, 큐레이터로, 예술적 생산과 공간 정치의 관계를 탐구하며 독립적 창작 및 참여 프로그램을 진행해왔다. 여러 국제적 맥락을 가로질러 활동하며, 카메룬의 RAW 아카데미, 국립현대미술관 레지던시, 광주비엔날레 큐레이터 아카데미, 홍콩 파라사이트 워크숍, 일본 아르쿠스 프로젝트 레지던시 등에 참여했다. 케임브리지 대학에서 비평과 문화학 박사학위, 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 세계문학 석사학위를 취득했다.

[Conversation] Avani Tandon Vieira: Geography as Method, Space as Practice

YPC SPACE invites Avani Tandon Vieira, a researcher and curator working across Asia, for a conversation on artistic and critical practices through the lens of geography and space.
In this talk Dr. Avani Tandon Vieira will share her work as a literary critic working at the intersections of postcolonial studies and critical geography. Covering her scholarly practice, pedagogical interventions, and curatorial work, it will explore how space can serve as a generative framework for creative production, within and across our distinct contexts. Looking from her background as a South Asianist to her more recent work in East Asian contexts, Avani will present interdisciplinary interventions including her thesis project ‘The Geography of Letters,’ the installation work ‘Where is the Heart of the City?’(New Delhi, Seoul, Moriya City 2024-25), the research project ‘The City is not a Line’(Seoul 2024), and the collaborative moving-image work ‘As Far as I Remember’(Gwangju 2024).
Dr. Avani Tandon Vieira is a writer, researcher, and curator from India. Avani’s work is concerned with the entanglements of artistic production and spatial politics, addressed through an attention to independent creative production and participatory interventions. Her practice spans several international contexts and has been recognized, among others, by the RAW Académie, Cameroon, the MMCA Seoul Researcher Residency, the Gwangju Biennale Curators’ Academy, the Para Site Workshops for Art Professionals, Hong Kong, and the ARCUS Project Residency, Japan. She holds a PhD in Criticism and Culture from the University of Cambridge, where she was a Gates Cambridge Scholar, and a master’s in World Literatures from the University of Oxford.
