더 나은 미래를 쉽사리 상상하기 어려운 시대, 시스템은 너무나 단단하고 견고하여 깨지지 않을 것 같은 시대에, 개개인의 태도와 행동은 가시적인 변화를 가져오지 못한다는 생각에 무력함에 빠지곤 한다. 《리버스 엔지니어링》은 시스템을 역추적하여 기술을 밝혀내는 ‘역공학‘의 방법을 좇아, 거대한 세계의 압력 하에서 상황에 순응하거나 절망하는 대신에 기존의 체계를 이용하면서 그에 균열을 일으키는 활동에 주목한다. 세 작가의 작업은 사태의 기원을 거슬러 올라가 추적하거나 서로 멀어진 세계를 맞붙여 사유를 재조정하며 체제를 뒤집어 본다. 단단한 세계에 비해 이들의 활동은 미세하고 불안정하지만, 작은 제스처가 때로는 더 큰 변화를 가져오기도 한다는 믿음에 기반한다.

When the social system seems invincibly permanent, it is almost impossible to imagine a better future. Helplessness pervades as individuals realize how one’s thoughts and behaviors can’t make a difference. In this dire circumstance, Reverse Engineering follows the method of ”reverse engineering,“ which uncovers the underlying mechanism by tracing a system backward, to navigate acts of (ab)using the system to create fissures within it. Three artists flip the system upside down by tracing back its origins and altering them or bringing into contact distant and unlikely realities. Compared to the real world, their defiant practice may seem insignificant and precarious, but the challenge continues with the belief that small gestures sometimes bring about larger-than-life changes.
