모든 것이 매끄러운 터치 스크린으로 수렴하는 시대, 더 이상 복잡한 기계 장치를 이리저리 고려하여 제품을 디자인하는 일은 일어나지 않는다. 비행기와 자동차 같은 운송수단부터 텔레비전과 핸드폰에 이르는 전자제품까지 20세기를 상징하는 제품 디자인은 과거의 영광처럼 남았을 뿐이다. 잭슨홍은 그 시절 산업디자인의 매혹적인 요소들을 가져와 자신의 ‘가시 뽑는 소년’을 만든다. 소년의 섬세한 근육과 긴장감 있는 포즈는 잭슨홍만의 조형언어로 새롭게 탄생한다.
잭슨홍(1971년생, 서울)
잭슨홍은 서울대학교 산업디자인과와 동대학원을 졸업하고 삼성자동차에서 디자이너로 활동했다. 이후 미국 크랜브룩 아카데미 오브 아트에서 입체디자인(3D design)을 수학하였고, 뉴욕 ECCO Design 및 여러 디자인 스튜디오에서 경력을 쌓았다.
2005년 쌈지스페이스 스튜디오 프로그램 거주 작가로 선정되면서 미술가로서의 활동을 시작한 이래, 순수미술과 디자인의 중첩된 영역을 바탕으로 디자인과 설치 미술, 조각과 장식미술을 아우르는 다양한 물리적 대상들과 그 이면의 역사적 맥락, 추상적 질서를 고안하고 제작해 왔다.

In a time when all mechanical manipulations take place on a sleek touchscreen, product design no longer involves an intricate symphony of pieces and parts. From vehicles like airplanes and cars to electronics like televisions and cell phones, the iconic product designs of the 20th century are under the shadow of their former glory. Jackson Hong takes the mesmerizing elements of industrial design from the heyday and creates his own version of the classic sculptural motif Boy with Thorn, where he translates the delicate muscle and tense pose into his signature design.
Jackson Hong (Born 1971 in Seoul, South Korea)
Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in visual & industrial design at Seoul National University, Master of Arts in 3D Design at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA. He worked as an automotive designer for Samsung Motors in Seoul and as a consumer and electronic product designer for ECCO Design in New York, as well as for various other design studios.
In 2005, he began his career as a fine artist after being selected as a resident artist for the Ssamzie Space Studio Program. His work spans the overlapping areas of fine art and design, including design, installation art, sculpture, and decorative arts. He devises and creates various physical objects, considering their historical contexts and abstract orders.
To date, he has held over 14 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions. Some of his recent notable exhibitions include: What Things Dream About (Group Exhibition, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, 2024), Faithful Failure: Unrepresentable Representation (Group Exhibition, Busan Museum of Art, Busan, 2021), Burn Baby Burn (Solo Exhibition, Ilwoo Space, Seoul, 2021), The 6th Anyang Public Art Project: Symbiotic City (Group Exhibition, Anyang Pavilion, Anyang, 2019), Autopilot (Solo Exhibition, Perigee Gallery, Seoul, 2016), Cherry Blossom (Solo Exhibition, Audio Visual Pavilion, Seoul, 2015), Objectology – Design and Art (Group Exhibition, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon, 2014), and Hermes Foundation Missulsang 2012 (Group Exhibition, Atelier Hermes, Seoul, 2012).
