[출판회-퍼포먼스-대화] 타일러 코번: 모놀로그들

타일러 코번이 지난 15년간 써 온 각본을 발췌해 묶은 『모놀로그들 Some Monologues』(Wendy’s Subway, 2025) 출간 기념회를 진행합니다. 퍼포먼스, 미술 글쓰기, 픽션의 교차점에서 전개된 코번의 작업에서 특히 모놀로그는 말 속에서 “나(I)”가 드러나는 여러 모습에 주목합니다. 나아가 코번은 대안적 역사, 법적 인격, 디지털 노동, 공명 주파수 등 다양한 주제를 단순 기록/발표 형식이 아닌 장소 특정적이고 사회적으로 친밀한 양식으로 다뤄왔습니다.
『모놀로그들』은 이전까지 출판된 적이 없는 것을 포함한 각본, 그리고 작가와 대화를 나눴거나 제작에 협업했던 11명의 작가, 큐레이터, 연구자 등의 글이 수록되어 있습니다. 이론적, 시적, 자전적 글쓰기를 넘나드는 글을 통해 확장된 모놀로그는, 이번 출간회에서 퍼포먼스를 통해 다시금 갱신됩니다. 코번은 미국 배우이자 작가인 스팔딩 그레이(1941-2004)의 1인 퍼포먼스 “A Personal History of American Theatre”(1980)에서 영감을 받아 새로운 모놀로그 “People”을 선보입니다. 과거 출연했던 연극 제목이 적힌 인덱스 카드를 넘기며 무대 뒤에서 벌어진 이야기를 들려준 그레이의 작품을 본따, “People”은 프로젝트를 위해 인터뷰 한 전문가, 공연에 왔다가 호감을 표현한 관객, 협업자 수전 베넷(시리의 성우), 그를 모욕했던 데이터 센터 직원 등의 이름이 적힌 카드를 경유하여 여러 목소리를 불러 모읍니다.
*타일러 코번은 뉴욕에서 활동하는 예술가, 작가, 교수이다. 2024년 앤디 워홀 재단 예술 작가 지원금을 받았으며, ArtReview, BOMB, C Magazine, Dis, e-flux journal, frieze, LEAP, Metropolis M, Mousse, Rhizome 등에 글을 기고해왔다. 저서로는 『I’m that angel』(자가 출판, 2012), 『Robots Building Robots』(CCA Glasgow, 2013), 『Richard Roe』(Sternberg, 2019), 『Solitary』(Sternberg, 아트선재센터, 2022)가 있다. 파리 퐁피두 센터, 베르겐 쿤스트할, 런던 헤이워드 갤러리, 홍콩 파라 사이트, 뮌헨 쿤스트페어라인 등에서 작품을 선보였다.

“Some Monologues” — Book Launch, Performance, and Conversation

Join us for the release of Some Monologues by Tyler Coburn, a publication that gathers fifteen years of the artist’s scripts (Wendy’s Subway, 2025). Working at the nexus of performance, art writing, and fiction, Coburn creates monologues that explore how the “I” is marked in speech. His myriad topics—alternate history, legal personhood, digital labor, and resonant frequency, to name a few—defy straightforward modes of presentation, often insisting on site-specificity and social intimacy at the expense of conventional documentation. The scripts in Some Monologues, many of which have not previously been published, appear alongside texts by eleven artists, writers, curators, and scholars who have come across these performances in one way or another. Spanning theoretical, poetic, and autobiographical registers, these contributions offer new perspectives on the monologue as a form—one that will be further expanded through a new monologue performed by Coburn at this launch event.
Coburn’s monologue, People, is inspired by A Personal History of American Theatre (1980), a one-person performance by American actor and writer Spalding Gray (1941–2004). Gray shuffled through index cards bearing the names of plays he had acted in, telling behind-the-scenes stories as he went. Following this approach, People moves through cards indicating the names of people who appear in Coburn’s book: an academic interviewed for a project, an amorous attendee at a performance, collaborator Susan Bennett (the original voice actress of Siri), a data center employee who insulted him, and more. People brings focus to Coburn’s many collaborators and the monologues they helped create.
Following the performance, Coburn will be joined in conversation by Jiwon Yu, a contributor to his book Solitary (Sternberg Press and Art Sonje Center, 2022) and co-director of YPC SPACE. Together they will discuss writing and editorial practices that document or mobilize past work, as well as technological media that reposition the “I” across physical, virtual, and legal domains.
*Tyler Coburn is an artist, writer, and professor based in New York. He received a 2024 Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant, and his writing has appeared in ArtReview, BOMB, C Magazine, Dis, e-flux journal, frieze, LEAP, Metropolis M, Mousse, and Rhizome. Coburn is the author of four books: I’m that angel (self-published, 2012), Robots Building Robots (CCA Glasgow, 2013), Richard Roe (Sternberg, 2019), and Solitary (Sternberg and Art Sonje Center, 2022). He has presented artwork at such venues as Centre Pompidou, Paris; Bergen Kunsthall; Hayward Gallery, London; Para Site, Hong Kong; and Kunstverein Munich.
