스튜디오 프로젝트 02. 멀티플 스피리츠
두 번째 ‘스튜디오 프로젝트’의 초청 작가는 도쿄와 빈을 기반으로 활동하는 퀴어 페미니스트 아트 진(zine) 프레스이자 리서치 플랫폼 멀티플 스피리츠입니다. 멀티플 스피리츠는 9월 16일부터 21일까지 YPC SPACE 프로그램 룸을 덩굴처럼 확장하는 아카이브로 전환하고, YPC와 함께 진행한 리서치-나눔 프로그램, 그리고 2025년 12월 모리미술관으로 이어질 프로젝트의 일환으로 워크숍을 진행합니다.
멀티플 스피리츠의 실천은 인쇄물과 출판을 매개로 퀴어 페미니스트 실천의 비선형적 계보를 다시 쓰고자 합니다. 출판과 연구를 통해 이성애규범적 혹은 신자유주의적 페미니즘 담론에 내재된 성장지향성을 재현하기보다, 오히려 모순, 간극, 실패, 복잡성을 전면화합니다. 특히 19세기 이후 동아시아 여성 해방 운동 속에서 끊임없이 변형되고 논쟁적인 개념으로 자리했던 ‘신여성’을 주요 렌즈로 삼습니다.
YPC SPACE에서 펼쳐질 아카이브는 이러한 탐구를 확장하여, 시각적 코드와 사회·예술적 운동을 연결하는 그물망을 통해 근대화와 식민주의가 어떻게 대중문화와 교차하는지를 추적합니다. 나아가 이미지에 교차하는 다중적 관계를 탐구하고, 초국적 독해를 제안함으로써 세대 간의 단절과 부재, 그리고 감각으로 전승되는 새로운 계보를 환기합니다.
*2018년 미술 작가이자 배우 엔도 마이와 큐레이터이자 연구자 마루야마 미카가 결성한 멀티플 스피리츠는 현대미술, 대중문화, 영성, 액티비즘의 교차 지점을 탐구하며 초국적 교류를 지향한다. 진 제작 및 전시, 강연, 낭독, 워크숍 등 다양한 활동을 경유하여여 잡지와 인쇄 문화를 역사적·정치적 도구로 재활용한다. 또한 에세이, 가십, 일상적 대화를 통해 역사를 다시 서술하고 새로운 어휘를 만들어내며, 학문적 규범을 넘어서는 다양한 목소리를 증폭시킨다.

📌[워크숍] Workshop and Gathering

멀티플 스피리츠와 함께 덩굴처럼 뻗어나가는 아카이브를 함께 확장하고 만들어가는 시간. 워크숍은 ‘해방’의 상징으로 기능하는 이미지, 그리고 성, 젠더, 비규범적 관계에 대한 문화적 재현물을 중심으로 퀴어 독해를 시도합니다. 멀티플 스피리츠는 지금까지 진행한 리서치 내용을 공유하고, 참여자들은 각자가 생각하는 ‘해방’의 모습에 대해 공유합니다. 이 워크숍에서 공유된 내용은 아카이브의 일부가 되어 향후 발간될 진에 수록되고, 2025년 12월 모리미술관에서 선보일 설치 작업에 반영될 예정입니다. 더불어 같은 날, 멀티플 스피리츠의 리서치 및 활동 소개 토크(4-5시)가 진행됩니다.

Studio Project 02. Multiple Spirits
Our second Studio Project guest is Multiple Spirits, a queer feminist zine press and research platform based in Tokyo and Vienna. From September 16–21, they will transform the program room at YPC SPACE into a temporary base for their “vine-like” archive, co-organize a research-sharing program with YPC, and host a workshop and gathering as part of their ongoing project leading to their presentation at the Mori Art Museum in December 2025. Besides the scheduled programs, Multiple Spirits and YPC will conduct joint research visits and conversations into the “New Woman,” a mutable and contested figure within East Asian Women’s liberation movements since the 19th century.
This edition of Studio Project explores Multiple Spirits’ practice centered on printed matter and publication as tools for rewriting a non-linear genealogy of queer feminist practices. Rather than affirming the conventional notions of success embedded in heteronormative or neoliberal feminist discourses, their zines and research foreground contradictions, gaps, failures, and complexities.
Founded in 2018 by artist and actor Mai Endo and curator and researcher Mika Maruyama, Multiple Spirits fosters transcultural exchange across contemporary art, pop culture, spirituality, and activism. Beyond zine-making, their activities span exhibitions, lectures, readings, and workshops, mobilizing magazines and print culture as political and historical tools. Through essays, gossip, and casual dialogue, they re-narrate histories and craft new vocabularies, amplifying voices that resist academic norms.

Open Studio: Vine-like Archive

Meet Multiple Spirits and their archive. Conceived as a connective web, this presentation interlaces visual codes with social and artistic movements, tracing how modernization and colonialism intersect with popular culture. In doing so, it reveals parallel relationships embedded in images, opens possibilities for transcultural readings, and evokes genealogies that carry sensations and intensities across generations, often through discontinuities and absences.

Multiple Spirits invites participants to co-create and expand their vine-like archive, weaving diverse visual languages and discourses through queer-reading. The workshop focuses on images as symbols of liberation, alongside themes of sexuality, gender, and non-normative relationships. Multiple Spirits will share their research while inviting participants to imagine and articulate their own visions of liberation. These contributions will form part of a collective archive to be featured in a forthcoming zine volume and incorporated into an installation for the Mori Art Museum in December 2025. On the same day at 4pm, a talk with Multiple Spirits will take place around their research and practice.
